Dec 23, 2023

Subject: Fighting Against the Carnal Mind

Scripture Reading: Romans 8: 1 – 14

Memory Verses: Romans 12: 1 – 2

Objective: To help believers combat the root cause of sin.

Introduction: The carnal mind is in opposition to the righteousness of God and embraces the works of the flesh. It is self-seeking and worldly, following the course and fashion of the world by obeying the impulses of fleshy thoughts. A carnal mind is the root of a believer's struggle with sin. Whatever it is that consumes one’s thoughts or attracts undivided attention to, reflects one's state of mind. Whatever one says or does reflects their thought process and beliefs which indicates the spiritual or carnal mind.

1. What is said of the carnal mind in Romans 8: 7, and how does James 4: 4 concur with this?

2. Identify the signs and symptoms of the carnal mind. Mark 7: 22, 1 Corinthians 3: 3, Galatians 5: 19 – 21, 1 John 2: 15 – 16

3. Having identified these signs and symptoms, what constant battle does a believer face? Romans 7: 15 – 20

Note: Unless we put to death all the things that easily distracts us, we will continue to rebel against God. We CANNOT save ourselves from the devil’s attacks through our own strength. There is however a higher power that provides inclusive aid to overcome carnality. The born-again person who has not given over their mind completely to God is in danger of the devil’s hell.

4. What is the carnal nature that we are admonished to put off in Colossians 3: 5 – 9 and 1 Peter 2: 1; and what caution is there for those who do not mortify the deeds identity above? Romans 8: 8 & 13 (Part A)

5. What contrast is made between the carnal and spiritual minded individual, and state the result of each fruit? Romans 8: 6 & 13

6 What instruction is given to help those who struggle with the fight against the carnal mind and how are we encouraged in Galatians 5: 6, Romans 12: 1 & 2, James 4: 7 – 8, Ephesians 4: 22 – 25?

Note: Believers who are walking in the faith and testimony of Jesus Christ must make a conscious decision to strip themselves of the former nature (the old man) andsubmit to God and allow His words to penetrate their hearts and minds. This will start the change from within to bring freedom from the bondage of a carnal mind.
