Lesson No.

Apr 22, 2023

Subject: Labour to Rest

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 4: 1 – 11

Memory Verses: Matthew 11: 28 – 29

Objective: To heighten the anticipation for the rest that awaits the people of God.

Introduction: According to the Oxford dictionary, the word ‘labour’ means to work hard for something. Many believers work relentlessly to attain earthly dreams and aspirations. We become workaholics for the temporal and become spiritually lazy which hinders our pursuit of spiritual things. Be assured that there remains an eternal rest for believers. In order to obtain eternal life and everlasting peace, we are encouraged to work faithfully in the vineyard.

1. What promise awaits the people of God? Hebrews 4: 9 – 11

2. As we ‘labour to rest’, what are some spiritual activities that believers should engage in? Ephesians 4: 1 – 3; 1 Thessalonians 5: 17; Colossians 1: 10; Matthew 28: 19 – 20; Psalm 69: 10 (Discuss other spiritual activities believers should engage in as they labour to rest.)

Note: While we toil to have earthly results, it is of key importance that we place more emphasis on our walk with God. We are encouraged not to conform to the things of this world, nor to set our affections on them. Solomon reminds us that all is vanity. Let us labour to secure our place in God’s rest.

3. While we ‘labour to rest’ in this sinful world overwhelmed with lust, greed, and temptations, how are believers encouraged to cope? Galatians 5: 16; James 4: 7; Romans 12: 2

4. The present condition of man will be a hindrance in entering this rest. How does Galatians 5: 19 – 21 outline this, and what does Hebrews say is the major hindrance to entering this rest? Hebrews 4:6 & 11, Hebrews 3: 19

Note: Unbelief shut some of the Israelites out of the promised land. This example from Israel’s past should be enough to prevent believers from being deceived, hence losing the promise. Let us therefore encourage one another and hold firm to the confidence that we have in God while we ‘labour to rest’.

5. What is said about those who faithfully labour in the vineyard? 1 Thessalonians 5: 10 (last part); 1 Corinthians 15: 58; and what is God’s warning to a generation that continues to err? Psalms 95: 10 – 11

6. At the end of our labour on earth, what will be our hope according to Revelations 21: 4 – 6, 2: 7 & 17, 3: 5 & 21; and what will be the fate of those who treasure the things of this earth? Matthew 25: 46 (first part)

7. What remarkable transformation will take place for those who are faithful to the end? 1 Corinthians 15: 51 – 52

Encouragement: There will be rest on the other side of Jordan for all faithful believers. So let us labour while it is day, because after everything has passed, we need REST!

Thought Provoking Question: Is your current lifestyle preparing you for that ‘REST?
