Subject: The Lord’s Supper - A STATE OF READINESS!

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 11: 16 - 34

Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 11: 28

Objective: To engage believers in an extensive introspection prior to partaking of the holy emblem.

1. What is the true significance of the Lord’s Supper? Luke 22: 19, 1 Corinthians 11: 24 - 26

2. In approaching the Lord’s Table, what will we partake of and what is their significance? Mark 14: 22 - 25

3. Were the brethren at Corinth in a state of readiness to partake of the Lord’s Supper? State their shortcomings. 1 Corinthians 3: 3, 1 Corinthians 5: 1 - 4, 1 Corinthians 6: 1 - 8, 1 Corinthians 7: 1 - 3 & 10 - 12, 1 Corinthians 11: 16 - 21

Note: The church at Corinth was infamous for sexual misconduct, division, and misunderstanding of marriage among others. The scripture declares that when they came together to partake of the Lord’s Supper, that it was not for the better but for the worse (1 Corinthians 11:17), as their focus was more of self-indulgence (1 Corinthians 11: 20 - 22) which was to their own detriment.

4. In acknowledging the true significance of the Lord’s Supper, what warning comes from the Apostle Paul? 1 Corinthians 11: 27 & 29; and how are we cautioned in 1 Corinthians 11: 28 & 2 Corinthians 13: 5?

5. How serious is it to take the Lord’s Supper unworthily? 1 Corinthians 11: 30; and how does Galatians 6: 7 concurs with this?

6. The church at Corinth is the perfect example of what we currently face as a church. What admonition from the scriptures can we apply in order to be in a state of readiness? Matthew 5: 23 - 24, Hebrews 12: 14, Philippians 1: 27, Romans 12: 1, Colossians 3: 5

Conclusion: As believers we should know and understand the reason why we dine with the Lord, and make the necessary preparations needed to be found worthy to partake of the Lord’s broken body and shed blood. We should examine ourselves thoroughly and press towards a lifelong pursuit of holiness and a lifestyle of repentance. We should not brazenly approach the Lord’s Table, knowing we are not at the place that we should be. Pursue humility by confessing your sins before the Lord and rid yourselves of the snobbery towards your fellow brethren.
