Lessons From the Conversation at the Well

Subject: Lessons From the Conversation at the Well

Scripture: John 4:1–30

Memory Verses: John 4:14

Objective: To help us recognize that Jesus sees and values every person, regardless of their past, and offers them grace and purpose.

Warm-Up

How would you feel if someone knew everything about you—but didn’t judge you?

Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman helps us understand that Jesus knows our past. Yet, instead of condemning us, He breaks barriers, offers eternal life, and invites us to live transformed lives—and that we, like the Samaritan woman, are called to share this good news with others.

Questions

  1. What was the character of the woman Jesus encountered at the well? How did society see her?  John 4:16-18

  2. Knowing the woman’s ‘story’, did Jesus shame and condemn her? What offer of hope was extended to her? John 4:13-14

Discussion: What do you think “living water” means? Think About It: Only Jesus can satisfy the deep needs of our hearts.

3.     Why do you think it was a big deal for Jesus to talk to this woman? John 4:7-9

Note: Jesus’ ministering to those outcasts of the Jewish society (the Samaritans) reveals that He breaks barriers. He talks to everyone—even those others ignore. All people are valuable to God and Jesus desires that we demonstrate love to everyone.

4.     What conclusion can be drawn concerning salvation and eternal life? John 4:13-14, John 14:6

Note: Salvation and eternal life come only through Jesus. The “living water” (John 4:14) represents the eternal satisfaction and life Jesus gives, which no earthly source can provide.

Eternal life is not found in religion, good works, or human effort—it is a gift Jesus alone offers.

John 14:6 makes it clear: there is no alternative path to God. Jesus is not a way, but the way.

5.     When we have an encounter with Jesus, what is our responsibility? John 4:28-30, 39

Note: When you’ve met Jesus, you want others to know too. Our testimony about Jesus is a powerful tool in leading others to believe in Him. Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony.

Conclusion

Salvation comes only to those who recognize their desperate need for the spiritual life they do not have. Living water can be obtained only by those who recognize that they are spiritually thirsty. Salvation comes only to those who confess and repent of their sin and desire forgiveness. Before this immoral woman could embrace the Savior, she had to acknowledge the full burden of her sins.
