A More Excellent Way
Subject: A More Excellent Way
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 13
Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 14: 12
Objective: To emphasize the fact that the ‘more excellent way’ is to utilize our gifts for ‘the greater good.’
Introduction: The God of heaven gave man gifts. These were to be used to point others to the way of righteousness. However, men have been using these gifts for status and personal recognition. Let us now look at a more excellent way.
1. Paul had the daunting task of steering the Corinthian converts away from boasting about their abilities. What were the lessons taught in 1 Corinthians 13: 1 - 3 and in Romans 12: 3 - 8?
2. What did Jeremiah say earlier about boasting? Jeremiah 9: 23 - 24; and why is boasting considered foolish? James 1: 17, Matthew 25: 14 - 15
3. Having identified ‘charity’ as the greatest gift (1 Corinthians 13), how does he now explain the concept of ‘a more excellent way’? Romans 12: 9 - 21
4. What should be our only motive when seeking spiritual gifts? 1 Corinthians 14: 12; and did Paul demonstrate how his ability to speak with tongues (several different earthly languages) benefited the work of God? 1 Corinthians 14: 18 - 20
5. How are we encouraged to exercise being charitable in ‘a more excellent way’? Romans 15: 1 - 6, John 3: 14 - 21
6. When we fully grasp this concept, how will our actions change? James. 2: 1 - 10; and whose example would we be emulating? 1 Peter 2: 18 - 25
Conclusion: The more excellent way of utilizing our gift(s) is to give equitable service from a genuine heart governed by the spirit of God. As we interact with our environment and the people around us, we must remember that we are doing God’s service. Let us be intentional in honouring God as we travel this narrow path.
