Sound Doctrine (What Was Nailed to the Cross)
Subject: Sound Doctrine (What Was Nailed to the Cross)
Scripture Reading: Hebrews 9: 1 - 14
Memory Verses: Hebrews 9: 11 & 12
Objective: To identify from scripture what was nailed to the cross/taken out the way.
Introduction: Sound doctrine requires a clear understanding of what changed at the cross and what remains as God’s eternal standard. Scripture distinguishes between the moral law spoken by God Himself, and the ordinances associated with the Mosaic sacrificial system. This lesson examines the scriptures to determine what was taken out of the way through Christ’s sacrifice.
1. By whom were the ten commandments (the moral law) first spoken? Deuteronomy 4: 12 & 13; and by whom were they afterwards written? Exodus 24: 12, Exodus 31: 18
2. What is the purpose of the ‘moral law’? Romans 3: 20; and how long would it be in effect? Romans 7: 1
3. Who is the writer of ‘the book of the law’ often referred to as Moses’ law? Deuteronomy 31: 24 - 26; What was its purpose and for how long were the ordinances of blood sacrifices to last? Galatians 3: 19 - 26
4. Under the old covenant, temporary freedom from the guilt of sin came when sacrifices were offered on behalf of the guilty once per year by the high priest. How does Hebrews 9: 7 - 14 expose the insufficiency of that exercise and present the risen Christ as the perfect sacrifice?
5. How do Hebrews 7: 18 - 23 and Hebrews 10: 12 further highlight the futility of the ordinances practiced under the mosaic system and underscore the nature of the new and living way made perfect by Jesus Christ?
6. According to Hebrews 10: 5 - 10 and Colossians 2: 8 - 15, what handwriting of ordinance was nailed to the cross?
Note: The 10 commandments written on two tablets of stone are not merely historical relics left in some museum; they are enduring biblical principles on which every modern civilized society has been established. To state that these were nailed to the cross or done away with is part of the doctrine of false teachers.
