The Nature of this Promise

Subject: The Nature of this Promise

Scripture Reading: John 14: 12 - 14 & Luke 11: 9 - 13

Memory Verse: 1 John 3: 22

Objective: To reassure believers of the certainty of God’s promise.

Introduction: Misunderstanding the promise given in John 14:14 ‘If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it,’ often cause believers to question the veracity of this verse when their prayers go unanswered. It is the employment of ‘line upon line’ and ‘precept upon precept’ that makes such a promise clear.

1. How do Psalm 138: 1 - 2 and Isaiah 55: 10 - 11 remind us of the faithfulness of God and the certainty of His words?

2. What should we bear in mind when we make a request to God? 1 John 5: 14 & 15, John 14: 13 & 14; And of what are we assured? Romans 8: 28

3. What does Luke 22: 41 - 53 show regardless of the sincerity of our prayers?

4. What three elements were present in the prayer of one of the malefactors at the cross qualifying him for a place in the kingdom? Luke 23: 32, 33 & 39 – 43

5. How was a simple prayer, void of pretense and pride, regarded by Christ Jesus? Luke 18: 9 – 14

6. List the barriers to answered prayers mentioned in James 4: 1 - 3.

7. What role do forgiveness and thanksgiving play in making prayer requests? Matthew 6: 15, Philippians 4: 6
