Works of the Flesh - Fornication
Subject: Works of the Flesh - Fornication
Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 6: 9 - 20
Memory Verse: 1 Corinthians 6: 18
Objective: To understand God's design for sexual purity, and recognize the profound spiritual and physical consequences of sexual immorality.
Introduction: In Galatians 5:19, Paul begins his list of the works of the flesh with sexual sins, specifically mentioning fornication. Derived from the Greek word porneia (the root of the modern word pornography), fornication biblically encompasses all forms of sexual intimacy between a man and a woman outside of the covenant of marriage. In a culture which heavily normalizes and promotes sexual freedom, the biblical standard remains absolute; sexual intimacy is a sacred, God-given gift designed exclusively for marriage. Any deviation from this design is a destructive work of the unredeemed flesh.
1. What is the explicit will of God regarding our physical bodies and sexual conduct? Ephesians 5: 3, 1 Thessalonians 4: 3 - 5
2. How does Paul distinguish the sin of fornication from the other types of sin? 1 Corinthians 6: 18
Note: While all sins are offensive to God, fornication is unique because it is a sin "against one's own body." Since the believer's body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, engaging in fornication is a profound desecration of God's dwelling place, leaving distinct spiritual and emotional fractures.
3. How did Joseph respond when he was tempted to commit fornication, and what did he recognize about the true nature of this sin? Genesis 39: 7-12
4. What does the writer of Hebrews declare about the marriage bed, and who will God judge? Hebrews 13: 4
5. Is it possible for a person who has fallen into the sin of fornication to be forgiven and restored? 1 Corinthians 6: 9 - 11, 1 John 1: 9
Conclusion: Fornication is not merely breaking a religious rule; it is degrading God's holy design for human intimacy. It promises freedom but ultimately leads to spiritual bondage. However, the grace of God is infinitely greater than any past sexual sin. Through the blood of Christ, believers are washed, sanctified and empowered by the Holy Spirit to offer their bodies as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable unto God.
